Simple answer
those people being liberal and sophisticated on the pictures left Afghanistan in the 80s before the situation escalated
I come from a moderate muslim afghan family descended from the former soviet union on my fathers side My grandma on my fathers side was a very conservative socialite but my mother was a school teacher.
We left like most of the wealthy afghans the country in the 80s
